-FOR MY GRANDFATHER-

Shuyi Mao

those candies you preserved

a whole winter

carefully wrapped

waiting

your eyes glittered

brighter than sweet wrappers

you were more childish than I

and happier

now thinner

disease and time

like the white paper you wrote on

spotted with ink

our memories

a ground

you taught me to read and now you teach

me how to lose

with grace

when I have little to lose

to wipe your floor

every day

to look life

in the face
